Snowbird: The Big Mountain Experience
Snowbird is Utah's most vertical resort at 3,240 feet. The Aerial Tram takes you to the summit of Hidden Peak and drops you into some of the most serious terrain in American skiing. Even confident intermediates need to pick their lines carefully up here.
But Snowbird isn't just for experts. The Mineral Basin area offers long, wide intermediate runs with access to the resort's famous powder. And because Snowbird is snow-assured — with an average of over 500 inches per year — the quality of even groomed runs is exceptional.
Snowboards are welcome at Snowbird, and the resort has a terrain park. It also tends to feel slightly more modern and resort-like compared to Alta's old-school mountain feel.
Alta: The Skiers' Mountain
Alta is one of three skiers-only resorts left in North America. No snowboards. For powder skiers, that's a feature. The powder lasts longer and the crowd tends to be experienced and serious.
Alta gets more average snowfall than Snowbird (547 inches per year) and has a legendary first-tracks culture. When it snows, Alta skiers move fast. The mountain has two distinct base areas — Albion (better for beginners and intermediates) and Wildcat (more expert terrain) — giving it range that surprises many first-time visitors.
Alta's pricing tends to be slightly lower than Snowbird, and its lodging has a classic, unpretentious feel. If you're a skier who values culture and powder over amenities, Alta is likely your mountain.
Should You Ski Both?
If you can, do it. The Snowbird/Alta interconnect lets you ski both on a joint pass. Start the morning at Snowbird's Tram, cross over to Alta's powder stashes in the afternoon. The Ikon Pass covers both resorts.
