Big Cottonwood Canyon is 25 minutes from The Lifthouse and home to Brighton and Solitude. Both get Utah's famous powder with less extreme terrain than their Little Cottonwood neighbors. But they draw different kinds of skiers.

Brighton: Best for Families and First-Timers
Brighton is one of Utah's most beginner-friendly resorts. The beginner area is well-designed, the ski school is solid, and the vibe is relaxed. It's where a lot of Salt Lake kids learn to ski.
Brighton also has the most progressive terrain in Big Cottonwood Canyon, with multiple terrain parks ranging from beginner features to advanced jumps and rails. Night skiing is available on select runs — one of the few Utah resorts with this option.
Brighton welcomes snowboards and skis equally, making it the go-to for mixed groups. It also tends to be more accessible price-wise than Snowbird or Alta.
Solitude: The Local's Hidden Gem
Solitude lives up to its name. Even on a powder day, it doesn't fill up like Brighton or the Little Cottonwood resorts. That means more powder stashes later in the day and shorter lift lines.
Solitude has a European village atmosphere at its base, a good mix of beginner-to-expert terrain, and is connected to Brighton via the Interconnect — so you can ski both mountains on a joint pass.
Solitude is an excellent choice for intermediate-to-advanced skiers who want to avoid crowds. For complete beginners, Brighton may offer a slightly more curated learning environment.
